The relationship between children and dogs is truly special. At first, dogs don’t really understand who the crying, waving thing in the cradle is, but they soon learn that they are also part of the family. Later, they realize that it is worth being nearby when the baby is eating at the table, because there definitely will be a few easy bites to catch. When the child becomes a little older, endless ball games and walks can come – lots and lots of shared experiences that strengthen the bond between the two.
If we want a good relationship to develop between our dog and our child, we should always keep the dog’s interests in mind. Most of the time, they’re the half that has to tolerate the child’s approach, which is why it is important to keep this under control. Just as we don’t allow the dog to climb into the baby’s cradle, we also shouldn’t let the curious crawling baby hang out in the dog’s bed. The same is true if the baby approaches the dog’s dinner bowl or reaches for the toy in its mouth.
While the baby is small, we can do the most by taking lots of walks together to make the presence of the child a positive experience for the dog. When the child is a little older and our dog is also quite patient, throwing a snack to the dog can be fun. Later, there can be walks when the child takes the dog for a walk. And for this, the JK9®Paw Patrol dog harness featuring children’s favourite four-legged cartoon heroes will be a perfect addition!
Important: An exciting thing to see or smell, or perhaps another dog, can easily make the dog pull kids away, especially if there is a large difference in weight between the two. Therefore, when walking together, we should use two leashes: one that we give to the child, and one we hold ourselves, thus ensuring that the dog cannot pull them away.
