Weaving between the legs is a spectacular trick, one of the great advantages of which is that we can make the experience of standing above them positive. This is something that otherwise many dogs do not normally like.
👉 Hold a treat in each hand and call the dog to your feet.
👉 If the dog is on your left side, step forward with your right foot and stop, then guide her through using the treat in your right hand.
👉 After this, call her to the other side.
👉 Praise, reward, then move on with your left foot and repeat the previous steps on that side as well.
👉 Repeat this, gradually accelerating the pace and slowly leaving out the step-by-step reward.
👉 If she is doing well, attach the command word, “weave”.
👉 If possible, avoid slippery surfaces during exercises so that if your dog is working with a lot of momentum, her legs won’t slip.
👉 If your dog is visibly sensitive to being below you, take a few practice opportunities to praise and reward her if she lets you stand above her before you start walking.
👉 Always say the command word in advance, gradually stop leading and reduce the hand and body gestures, i.e. straighten up.
👉 Gradually increase the length of the exercise.”
