Rolling over is a very cute trick in itself, but by building onto it, we can later teach our pet funny tasks such as being shot or going to bed.
Sit down on the floor and tell your dog to lie down in front of you, then ask her to lean on her side as she learned earlier. From this position, start moving your hand, full of treats, above her shoulder towards her spine. As she follows the movement of your hand, she will turn to her back and then to her other side. Once this is done, praise and reward. If the task goes well up until this point, attach a command word to it, as usual, and say “roll over”.
👉 Do not try to turn your dog over with your hand, as this can be an unpleasant experience for her. At the same time, you can help her by gently pushing her leg in order to help her turn onto her spine.
👉 Be patient, fine tune your hand movements. Just stay calm, don’t be too quick with your hands, sooner or later your dog will understand what you want from her.
👉 It can be helpful to use a clicker to confirm small steps quickly and accurately. –
👉 Teach your dog to roll in both directions. Start practicing now with the side she can use better.
👉Be gradual with lifting her from the ground and eventually reduce your help to small hand movements.
👉 Practice with the “lie on your side” trick to pinpoint exactly what is expected from each command word.”
